We collaborated with a coalition of legal services organizations, including Feerick Center for Social Justice, to create a set of short animated explainer videos to help low-income, unrepresented litigants defend consumer debt cases brought against them in New York City’s courts. Designed in chapters, our project enabled litigants “choose their own adventure,” only viewing information that was directly relevant to their case. In the years after the financial crises, consumer debt cases and abuses were rampant, and legal services groups were overwhelmed. Our videos, shown primarily at legal self-help centers at NYC’s civil courts, helped thousands who couldn’t afford lawyers successfully defend themselves.
