We collaborated with the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti and Partners in Health to support their efforts to address the human rights and health issues created by excessive pre-trial detention in Haitian prisons. Our two partner organizations established a medical-legal collaborative that traveled to three prisons in Haiti to provide medical checkups for inmates and prison staff; they brought with them a group of lawyers who screen the prisoners for potential rights violations, like poor quality trials without legal defense or extended pre-trial detention. We produced a video that IJDH and Partners and Health used to advocate within the Haitian Justice Ministry for access to more prisons; and two other videos to expose terrible conditions in the prisons and lack of access to justice for many prisoners.
