NMAP partnered with human rights litigation organization, Interights, and local partners in Bulgaria and Romania, to support the Campeanu v. Romania case, which focused on a young man with developmental disabilities who died of HIV due to neglect in a Romanian mental institution. With no next of kin, there was no one to hold the institution accountable. That case challenged limitations on the ability of NGOs to bring cases in the European Convention on Human Rights on behalf of institutionalized people with disabilities who have died or are otherwise unable to bring a case on their own. Our video supported the case and helped get a clear ruling by the ECHR granted organizational standing to Interights.
